Fellow E'rs;
I have only heard good things about Redline products. I have 100,000 miles on a 94 XLT with the automatic. My transmission works fine. Would it do more harm than good with 100,000 miles on my Explorer to switch my tranny fluid over to Redline tranny oil now? I thought maybe in the process I'd add a tranny cooler kit to it, any suggestions on which kit I should get? For both of these ideas, I thought it would be cheaper going this route to extend the life of my tranny. Or am I out in left field on this? Anybody know which model of tranny is in the 94's? Thanks so much!--DuaneD

Duane,
Im not sure on how to answer your question about changing your fluid however I am 99% certain that we have the AL4D tranny.

I would say why not? i don't think the trans would be hurt by the Redline. My 95 has it from the previous owner and it's great. i wouldn't worry about the milage. Have you had the trans flushed out beofre? If not it's time even if you don't use redline!

As stated above, flush the tranny fluid, even if it is not with Redline.

I do not know of any reason that a synthetic tranny fluid would "hurt" a tranny. I would have switched to Royal Purple synthetic had it not been for the cost involved before I left for a vacation. It should get switched over at the next tranny service.

I was also thinking of addeing a second tranny cooler or upgrading the one that it currently there. Let me know what you decide on.

Oh yea, I think any of the current synthetics are a good way to go, Redline, AMSOIL, Royal Purple. Pick your fav and make sure you change it regularly.

Just as a passing. I have noticed several customers cars that have switched from standard oils to synthetic that have developed noticeable oil leaks. This is more common on older cars, but from what I understand the oil leaks are related to running the synthetic oils. It is rumored that the leaks form due to the synthetic's inability to swell the rubber seals like standard oil can.
I am not aginst synthetic oils, I would just (for pocket-book saftey reasons), stick with standard oil untin the time comes to have the tranny rebuilt. Once it is rebuilt you may consider switching to synthetic.
By the way, if you are worried about how long your tranny may last, mine ('92 LXT) has over 186,000 miles so far and its still running strong.

I changed my auto trans oil to redline high temp instead of mercon 5 around a year ago.
I have had no problem at all and the oil is still red like new.
