Well guys this is going to be a long one but that's just because I want to be clear and list all the symptoms. I just recently bought a '94 ex. off of a friend and fixed it up. Well I thought I did and now there is something new that I have noticed. I usually feel this particular shudder, that feels to be becoming from the back half of the Ex., when I am either going up the driveway or when i am at a stop and I turn the wheel when I go forward. Ok so when I go up our driveway, which is pretty steep, and I go very slowly, then the truck has a shudder almost like when you forget to take off the E-Brake. But I feel this shudder the most when I come to a Stop or something. If I am driving with the wheels facing directly forward and I come to a stop, then I turn the wheels either way at a stop, and when I then start driving again, left or right, the truck REALLY shudders a whole lot. At first I thought that the rear differential was out/low on gear oil. So I cleaned it all out, sealed it back up and filled her up with the required amount. That still didn't do anything and the shudder is there as always. The only other piece of info I can give you guys is that this usually does not happen when I initially start her up. I have to warm the ex. up, driving around not just sitting, and after driving for about five minutes I can feel the shudder. On the rare occasion if the ex. is really warmed up, you can subtly feel the shudder when just pulling away straight. Any help will be appreciated, thanks so much.

You should list what you have done to it. It could be a wealth of things.
Like....
U-joints
driveshaft
brakes
bearings
bushings
tires
wheels

Well actually I have not done anything besides putting in new gear oil. I am not much of a mechanic or anything but I am pretty sure I can tell the difference btw. something like the wheels and tires and it actually being a problem with the driveshafts, gears, and differentials. I can tell you this I am pretty sure it is something with the u-joints, driveshaft, bearings, gears in the diff., or something along that line. If it were the tires or wheels it wouldn't really need to be warmed up, I don't think....? Any way that's all I have done and I don't really have any other info. It shudders when I am driving at very low speeds and not when I am breaking so it shouldn't be the breaks. It only happens after the Ex. warms up so please any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Any help guys...please.

With 1st gen Explorers ANYTHING is possible. I would research the items I listed on this board. Everything is covered on how to troubleshoot each item. You need to do it step by step to eliminate things. The problem could be 1 thing or several combined.
I will say it sounds more like wheel bearings, u-joints, or bushings.

I actually had the same sort of problem with another truck I once owned. It did turn out to be the u joints. They didn't look bad or even have any play in them, but to be safe I replaced em. After taking them out I found that there wasn't any grease in them and the bearings had worn grooves in the crosses.

Any more opinions guys...?

All right guys I read a little more about this problem and I got some notes. What I found was that they said I have to replace the clutch pack in the rear differential and axle. Now I don't know what a clutch pack is, where to find them, or if I can install a new one myself. If anyone can tell me what this is, how it works, and if it is at all possible to just install myself I would appreciate your help. Thanks guys.

Who said? I highly doubt it's anything in the 8.8 rear end. These things just don't have many problems.
