*sigh* Tranny #4? New F-150 perhaps? NEVER AGAIN AN EXPLORER, MAYBE?!

I'm sure if somone knew what was wrong, they'd tell you. It is possible to stump the people here. I've never had anything like that happen, so I can't answer. I can throw out suggestions tho... Possibly something wrong with the shifting link that it is not registering in the tranny that you have shifted the lever into D....

Yes ... We all know exactly what is wrong with it but we just do not want to tell you.

You must think that we are all mechanics and tranny specialists. Like the post above this one stated. If someone knew exactly what the problem was i am sure they would have told you. Have you thought about bringing it to a mechanic and have them look at it? I mean after all you dont know whats wrong with it so your not going to be able to fix it. Let someone who knows worry about it.

I hate to tell you this...

...but the answer to your problem seems to be to simply get away from Ford products.

I too have fought and fought and fought the tranny in our 95 4x4 XLT Explorer till I am blue in the face. It all started around 100k miles...sorry...but a vehicle that costs this much ought to have a tranny that lasts longer. The wonderful Ford dealer simply said "thats normal" ....oh...brilliant answer!

I guess thats why Ford had to lay off 35,000 employees. They can pull an "Enron" and blame outside forces on their lay-offs/troubles, but the bottom line is that when you build crap year ater year, the public catches on and stops buying...the money stops coming in...and you have to lay people off...simple as that.

Besides, after the infamous Firestone roll-over fiasco, I now own a 4000lb trot-line anchor. It has absolutely NO reasle value at all. Lovely! Funny, you never see toyota or Nissan products involved in these types of fiascos...only cars from the US big three. (remember the Pinto? Corvair? Edsel?...you get the picture!)

I wish I had an answer for you, but as I read all the problems that everyone else has with their newer Explorers, I feel that Ford KNOWS about their ****ty build quality and really doesn't care about building a quality product.

They certainly don't care anymore about repeat buyers.

Sorry...I need something that will run, when I put the key in it and I'd like to get something for it in 5 years when I sell it. Ford is not the way to go, if you dig these qualities in a vehicle anymore. Sad.

answer maybe...

Sounds like the linkage needs to be adjusted. Take it to a tranny shop see what they say.

I looked it up in my ATSG book and for "No Engagement/drive in D or OD (2 and 1 OK)"

1. manual linkage adjustment- adjust
2. Rear one way clutch damaged-replace
3. Dirty fluid -clean trans and valve body
4. OD oneway clutch damage - repair or replace

:shoot:
I have a 94 limited X and I'm on my 2nd tranny. my first tranny went out at 92K which set me off cuase it cost 1800 bucks to get it rebuit then I drove it for a while and noticed when I push the gas the engine would rev like it was going but there would be a delay then it would engage and " whamo" it would give you the whip lash affect then towards the end of its short life at 7K I started to not shift from 1st to 2nd I could drive about 4 blocks and then it would shift then on the highway I would have it in OD and it would rev up to 3 grand but if I put it in D it would run fine. and when I would put it in park it would act like it was in drive still so if I rev the motor it would roll forward till it hit the parking paw, then one day that left go to so I could drive it around in park, so then I took it back in and the tranny shop and they told me I need another over haul the casing inside was busted up and my electronics where shot, I read on another site the transmission runs on a electronics which needs enough voltage to beable to shift so if your alternator isn't putting out enough voltage its not going to shift right so after 800 bucks I have a new tranny it runs great! so you might want to check into that and what steveVB said sounds right as well

Sorry you're having so much trouble. The trannys come from Mazda, I don't know if you've checked with them yet. I've had some misfiring with mine, but nothing big.

My tranny went out on my Bronco II and that was the end of it for me. If my tranny ever went out on my explorer I wouldn't be having it. I don't blame you, I would get rid of the curse and buy an F-150 without hesitation. Good Luck with whatever you end up doing.

I don't want to start a big debate here but...

If it wasn't for the Firestone problems, Ford would not have lost money last year.

The problems are more than Ford, but we're not afraid to make them public knowledge. Last year the Mitsubitshi HQs were rated by the police and FBI for hiding and destroying documents saying that they're vehicles failed many safety tests. Within the first 3 months of production, GM recalled all of their 2002 full size trucks calling them "unsafe at any speed". You didn't hear about it because not many were sold. There are plenty of more stories...

you know what they say... "the tallest trees gather the most wind".
