I am changing out the pressure hoses on my rack and pinion. The new hose comes with the bracket plate that secures the two fittings into the rack. The plate slides over a stud on the rack and is then secured with a flange nut. I can't seem to find the old flange nut, but I was going to replace it anyway. It runs up the cost a bit but at this point I replace every bolt and nut that I remove, usually with black phosphorous hardware.
At any rate, I thought that the stud was M8-1.25 but I tried a M8-1.25 nut and it doesn't go on very well. It seems like it starts to thread but won't go down the stud that I can tell. I really don't want to force it without knowing it's the correct hardware. Maybe the thread pitch is only 1 instead of 1.25. I assumed that it was 1.25 because it's 1.25 (coarse) for most auto applications and its hard to find class 10 nuts with the fine threading.
The stud doesn't look like it 's anywhere near big enough to be M10 and it's definitely not M6 or M7. I tried a 3/8"-16 for kicks but it's not that either.
I guess I could go out and get a M8-1.0 nut and see if that works but it may just be that some force is required to spin it down. I don't think its supposed to be distorted thread or anything exotic like that.
Suggestions would be appreciated,
