U-Joint... Rear diff, All of these things get worn out pretty quick during burnouts.
Could be anything along the driveline.

how much to get the rear diff rebuilt?

how do i know if my ujoints are bad?

If the u-joints are gone, you should have quite a bit of play in your drive shaft.
U can see the ujoints just sliding under the truck and checking either end of the main shaft.

I honestly don't know how much it would be to get a rear end rebuilt, I've never blown one.
Sorry I'm not much help for prices.

Ben

$$$ try replacing your u-joints first, if the problem is in the rear diff it would probably be cheaper to find a used one and put that in.

like over $750 for a new rear diff? ballpark?

it seems when i got under the truck that the t-case is what has slack in it... both the front and rear driveshafts have about 1/4" play in them when i roll it forward in park about 2 inches to get the tension off of the tranny. then clunking is pretty loud when i twist the driveshaft hard. please tell me this is normal... what would a t-case run me?

More than likely its the u-joint. Definately get it done as soon as possible. You don't wanna be like me and have a u-joint break and be stuck putting it in 4wd without a rear driveshaft to get home.. Did that on my 97.. I was literally 2 blocks away from home when it broke.

the ujoints have no slack in them at all

try replacing the u jionts first, even if there is not noticable ware, or "play". engine torque is obviously much stronger than doing this by hand. also much cheaper. if this doesn't work, try finding A specialty shop, most drive line shops can re brg and adjust differetials for about 500 to 600 . as long as no hard parts are needed

is this the clunk you get when you have the wheel turned in rev. on on my second ex 04 xls 4.0L ohv and 04 xls with the flex 4.0L both of them did this clunk in rev with the wheel turned it is the auto 4wd

i have the same problem with my truck. someone told me that it is something in the dirveshaft. The part on the driveshaft that has the rubber boot covering the parts. I dont know whether the parts are replaceable or not, I just haven't taken the time to look further into it tho. I figure if it aint broken yet, then it aint too much of a problem. lol

i know this thread is old but i have the same issue, it clunks really hard when i put it in reverse, and then occasionally it will continue to clunk multiple times when backing up, this is sometimes accompained by a shift flare from the 2-3 gear change. thanks in advance

Ours had this too - in fact sometimes if parked nose down a slope, it wouldn't go into reverse easily at all. We had the transmission serviced (new filter, and change of fluid), and it drives like a new truck - no flaring, slips into reverse easily and given a good health report by the transmission place.

well i just had the tranny rebuilt last week so he should have definately changed the fluid and filter right?

Yep, he would have had to. Take it back and ask them to check he fluid level again; it may just be low.
