Slow to shift up after sitting overnight

I have a problem with the transmission shifting to a higher gear after sitting overnight. Any suggestions?

I checked the transmission fluid and it wasn't showing on the stick. Put in a quart and it shows full on the stick. It seemed to shift better during the day. I will find out in the morning. Thanks for the suggestion.
