I have a 2000 Explorer Sport 4.0L SOHC.

About a month ago I had to drive about 6 hours one-way and I knew it wasn't running well so I took it to my mechanic for a trip-check. He told me that the intake manifold gaskets need replacing and that some bolts were corroded on the exhaust manifold causing exhaust to leak. But, he told me the truck was safe to drive and that I could wait a few weeks on these repairs. So, I drove it down and about 4 hours into the trip I pulled over for gas and noticed that I was smoking under the hood. I let the car sit for about 20 minutes and checked the oil. It was a tad low, but I knew it probably wasn't cool enough and kept going.

Long story short, I came back a few days later, got the exhaust manifold stuff repaired after determining I could not do the job on my own. Truck runs like it's brand new now. Haven't been noticing the smoking issue until the last few days -- this morning quite significantly for only having driven it for 20 minutes.

When I pop the hood, the smoke seems to be originating from the top left corner (when facing the truck looking under the hood). But the origin of the smoke is not clear -- just the vicinity. I have been monitoring all my fluids and they never appear low when checked at the correct times.

I'm brand new to trying to do things myself and diagnose things. I do have a repair manual, but what I don't know is what the parts are that are in the top left under the hood. I know there's a couple heater hoses, but I wasn't even running the heater this morning. What are those two parts next to the wiper fluid resevoir? I can't find them labeled in my manual anywhere, but most pics are small.

The truck has never run hot either according to my dashboard.

Welcome to the forum! Is there any smell that comes with the smoke? Almost like a sweet smell or a burnt oily smell? Is it more of a steam than a smoke?

Hmmm. All i can say is that it's definitely a smoke smell, not a steam smell. As for sweet smell vs. burnt oily ... I'm not sure. I'll pay more attention and report back tho.

Okay, I'm going to say that it's more of an oily smell.

Can anyone tell me what those two parts are right above the windshield fluid reserve?

Thanks -- having names for them gives me some kind of research starting point to look into.

whoa, really? My cruise control did mysteriously stop working recently.

I just called my local dealer and my VIN didn't register under recall, so either it wasn't included or the service on it was already done with the original owners before me. I have a 2000 explorer sport and the online lists say 2001-2002 sports...

That info definitely makes me weary to keep driving it though!

any ideas on if this would make the CEL come on? Because it was on and I just had some exhaust manifold work done that I couldn't do myself (exhaust was leaking, running lean) and I undid the negative battery cable to get the light to go off a couple nights ago and it hasn't come back on.

Assuming it doesn't come back on, could that help me diagnose this?

Why do people keep making this same grammatical error? You're at least the second person I've seen this week. The word you are looking for is LEARY, not weary. Weary is what you would be after sitting on the side of the road for a few hours, waiting for a tow truck. Your apprehension, regarding the safety of your cruise control, makes you leary to drive it.

Weary:

Leary (also spelled Leery):

Uhhhhh....

Really dude? You're gonna pull **** like that out on a board like this? You must be hard up for some ####ing brownie points man.

And no, I'm not ####ing Leary about driving my truck, I'm ####ing WEARY! Because I have exhausted all patience and tolerance in trying to figure out this ####ing issue on my own, so I'm on this board looking for some help. And instead I get Mary ####ing Poppins jumping at the chance to give me a ####ing English lesson.

If someone's not on here asking for help with their grammar, THEN DON'T HELP THEM WITH THEIR ####ING GRAMMAR.
