Hello All,
I found the main source of smoke coming from the dash and/or vents (at least on my 91 XLT). There is a set of three open wire resistors(for blower motor speed control) that is located next to the AC condensor in the blower area. Leaves got down in there through the wiper shaft openings and were blown into the area where the resistors are. Well, they probably get hot, especially at the low speed setting and then the leaves start to burn. Fortunately I turned the blower off when it happened and the smoke stopped. There were enough leaves in there that could have started the plastic housing burning.
Anyway thanks to all that posted before about this issue. Reading all the posts generally helps with troubleshooting.
