Hello All:
I was trying to pull a boat out of the water, on a steep ramp, with my 98 Ford Explorer Sport 6cyl. 4.0L, Manual Transmission Truck w/ 130,000 miles . Anyways, I was afraid that my truck was going to go into the water so I held the gas in around 4000RPM while letting the clutch out. I should have done this the opposite way but, as I was doing this for about 10 seconds the engine revved really hard and smoke starting coming from the top of my transmission. I held too much gas with the clutch in. My engine temp stayed normal and The truck seemed to run fine (and pull the 2400 lb boat and trailer) the rest of the way home about 100 miles.
I know I did some damage somewhere, My question is what can I do to prevent further damage. Change the fluid? I know it’s a dry clutch but what exactly was causing the smoke, would the synthetic fluid burn up and cause problems if I don’t change it? Any other things (besides not being an idiot) I can do, some preventative main on the clutch before it quits on me?
Edit: I don't know if it was the clutch smoking or the tranny?
Thanks
