I fear it's really done for this time. Sigh.... I hardly drive the thing as I'm in school and mostly ride my bike. Yesterday I needed to get to the next town over real quick so I hopped in her and went on over. Before I got a chance to shift into drive, she died with the battery light on. Back into drive, turned over and this time got going but not without a weird delay between hitting the gas acceleration. Was like this for the 7 minute ride in each directions.
Last night I was driving along the highway to a friend's house, around 65mph, when I heard a ratteling whenever I accelerated. The "check engine" light then came on. I made it to my friend's house and hoped it was nothing big. This morning on the way to work it did the same, but sounded worse, so I dropped it off at the Shell station across the street.
The owner/mechanic told me that the gasket was cracked and had leaked fluid into the block, which diluted engine lubrication and killed the engine. For 1 hour of labor a 2 gallons of antifreeze he charged $93. (That seems a little much to me.)
On my way home from work smoke began to come out of the tail pipe, the ratteling was loud as all hell, check engine light on and engine heat needle showed it badly overheating. The engine cut out twice, with smoke coming from under the hood and eat time barely turned back over. I was able to barely roll into the service station 2 blocks from my apartment, where the mechanic came out and we looked at it together. He said he'd check it out, but I might need a new engine.
So- what do people think of Jasper reman engines? The mechanic said it'll take him a day to 1 1/2 days to install it, costing $600 (about 10 hours of labor). Jasper has an engine for my truck for $2600 after core rebate. After the work is done what sort of things should I be concerened about?
Thanks, everyone.

p.s. the following work has also been done on it:
new starter
new alternator
new water pump
rebuilt front u-joints
reman tranny (on 2nd reman as origional AAMCO one died, they replaced for free)
2 years ago one of the cylinders stopped compressing (dunno why) and the mechanic did a "machine job" on the valve and got it working...cost $1100
i think he also replaced the head with a used one for like $300 or so
