I was wondering if you guys have ever used winter tires on your vehicles year round? I work with a few guys that do and they seem to get good wear and mileage on the tires. Would any of you recommend doing this. I drive a 2002 explorer xls if that helps.

When you say "Snow Tires" what exactly do you mean? If you mean All Terrain tires that are M+S, then yes many of us do. I am a little partial to BFG A/T KO's. They have excellent snow handling, yet are VERY loud when cold. But once you get above freezing they quiet down and sound just like a normal tire.
I have used A/T's year round on all my 4x4's, even on my 4x2 truck. I have used them on the following with nice results :

*91 Ford F250 with 7.6 gas
I've only put about 10k miles in the last 4 years, but they handle fine in the summer, I actually find they are softer than normal tires and I can't spin the tires out as long as I used to.

*05 Dodge durango 4x4 5.7
I ran 18in Goodyear Wrangler silent armor's on this, wish I had taken them off before I turned it over to the insurance comp. I put about 20k on these and still had about 9/10th's original tread.

*99 Dodge durango 4x4 5.2
I have 16in cooper ST AT on this and about 20k miles, very fresh tread on these, still has the nipples on both sidewalls.

Just remember they will be a little softer in the summer, that's where most of your treadwear will occur.

I ran Michelin X-Ice's on my supercharged grand prix... That car could still break 'em loose no problem but from the previous goodyears, they were night and day difference. I run them again no questions asked on a car. As for a truck, I don't see why you can't just run your standard A/T. A snow tire is going to wear alot more in the summer.

I'd go with a BFG AT KO, great snow handling. I put 2 used on my front tires with a little more than 1/4in tread and noticed a HUGE difference. I am waiting on my taxes and buying 4 new. They handled great in 12in of snow.
