SOHC cam tensioner TSB

I am wondering if anyone can help me out on this issue. Today we were looking at a 98 SOHC and when it was started up there was a sound like the lifters ticking. After we drove it for a wgile and checked again later the sound was gone. i need some help from people who have had the cam tensioner problem if this is the sound it makes. This truck we drove had like 55K on it. I also heard ford extended the warentee on these engines? if so what is the new warentee? Thanks!

i have a 98 SOHC and i dont have the cam tensioner problem. my engine makes no noises or anything. im very happy with the SOHC, beats the hell out of my old 91 OHV. if its an option though, id go with the V8.

The noise you are describing sounds like the cam-tensioner noise my '97 SOHC had before the update. The warranty was extended to 6 years/72K on the cam-shaft tensioners and the lower intake manifold o-rings. The warranty transfers with the vehicle so if You buy it used the items are still covered to you. It would be more of an inconvenience to you though since you will have to take it in to Ford to get it repaired which could leave you without it for 1 day to 2 weeks depending on the dealership and wether or not they have the parts in stock. If I were looking at it I would make it a condition of the sale that the selling party get it repaired before I took delivery so I wouldn't have to mess with it. Initially it was covered under an Owner Notification Program 00M12 which meant that if your Explorer exibited the problem, Ford would repair it at no charge. It has since been changed to a recall 01M01 which means now that Ford will put in the updated parts wether it has symptoms or not. Copy the VIN and check Ford's web site www.ownerconnection.com and type in the VIN. It should tell you if there are any outstanding recalls. If it comes up with the 01M01 then you would have no problem getting Ford to honor it. You can also call your local Ford dealer and give them the VIN and they can see if there are any outstanding recalls on it. If they don't show any, it will be harder to get Ford to fix it. Better if the selling party messes with it in that case.

the noise on my dads truck seems to be getting louder and sounds like a diesel, is there anything i can check? or look at to see if its worn or damaged, i know ford will fix it for free, its only got 57K on it

I am getting the run around on this. I just called Ford and they said that recall #01M01 is not associated with a '00 SOHC.

Alldata.com lists a recall # 00M12 with the same desciption as the 01M01. The lady at Ford said that was information was wrong.

Anyone out there with a '00 SOHC have Cam Chain Tensioner rattles upon starting? Have you had it fixed under the recall?

Any information would be appreciated!

I am pretty sure the recall is for 97 and 98 SOHC's only. Your 2000 wouldn't be included.

I have 70k on my 97x and I also had the ratling noise in the egine area. So i went to a Ford dealership and they fixed the problem by replacing the o ring and the tensioner. It was 00m12 code for that problem. Since ford fixed it the noise is gone.
Just go to the nearest ford that provide servise and they should fix it. Good luck.

Do you happen to have that recall notice or remember what the details of the recall were?

Program 00M12 covers all SOHC Explorers built from Job 1 though 4/07/00. It is for the intake manifold o-rings and camshaft tensioners. When the tensioners fail, it causes a diesel type sound on cold start up that goes away within 2 minutes. Your '00 Explorer is elegible for this program.

Program 01M01 covers all '97 & '98 Explorers built through 10/20/98 at the Louisville plant and through 9/18/98 at the St. Louis plant. It is for plastic camshaft chain guides that can come apart causing a very loud rattle while the engine is running that doesn't go away after 5 minutes. Your '00 isn't elegible for this program since it already has the metal chain guide update that they will put in as a result of this program.

Alldata's description is not the same for these two programs:

00M12 - "Campaign - Camshaft Chain Tensioner & Intake Gasket"
01M01 - "Campaign - Front Cam Chain Guide Extended Coverage"

I get a loud ticking noice sometimes when she starts. ALSO, sometimes when she starts/cranks there is a rough noice like if the valves are floating?

She's a 2001, and it's been doing it for as far back as I can remember, something after 12K miles

Xplodor - I'm not sure about the '01. It sounds like a problem that is probably unrelated to either of these programs. The program for the revised tensioners and the installation of an oil reduction galley was officially issued in December, 2000. I'm not sure what happened to the Explorers built from 4/7/00 through the announcement of the program. I'm guessing that Ford had been installing the revised parts beginning on 4/7/00 and used the 6 months to test them out before committing to installing them in all affected SOHCs.

Having an '00 Explorer that was built in May 00 and hearing the ever-present knocking I'm a little miffed that Ford isn't covering all the trucks with this issue.

Re-surrecting an old thread here. Where can I find the exact date when my SOHC was built? It's a 2000 model so I guess that it was built in 1999?

On your vehicle certification sticker in your driver's door jamb. Upper left corner next to "Date:". It will show the month and day that it was built. I doubt if there is anyway to tell what actual day it was built though.
