Hello Forum,

I have been a long time lurker and I think I have identified my problem as being a broken Tensioner or Guide on my 2000 Explorer 4.0 SOHC. I started to go for it today by taking the various belt items off. I took a break after the alternator and took the Oil cap off and looked in to see what I could see in the valve covers.

I noticed something that did not look right. I eventually got something out with the help of some long nose clamps. I am thinking this looks like part of the timing chain guide but wanted to see if someone could verify this for me.

Stuff

My problem before was a loud clacking noise at idle and I figured this was the guide or tensioner flaping on the chain. Now I wonder if it was this piece banging around in the valve covers.

Either way it still sounds like I need to press on to replace the guide or tensioner but I was wondering if I should put it back together and see if the noise stopped.

Thanks for any advice/opinions.

broken tensioner or guide

I can't tell for sure from the photo but I suspect that you either have a broken primary tensioner or a broken left guide. The noise is most likely coming from a loose chain slapping against other parts of the engine. Eventually the wear will result in the chain either slipping or breaking. I suggest you continue your tear down and repair what is broken. The primary tensioner and guide can be easily replaced without retiming the camshafts.

Yeah, that's the guide. I wouldn't put everything back together & run it! Replace the guide & tensioner before starting your engine again! Right now you have a cheap fix compared to what may happen if you try starting or driving the EX now.
