:us: i am looking for some input on my 99 explorer. when it is cold it idles very poorly if at all until it reaches op temp. i was told to replace the upper intake manifold gaskets, so i did and it did not help. i just pulled the upper and lower off and the lwer looks to be warped. any input would be great.
it is a 4.0 sohc v6

Check your IAC valve. It can get clogged up and not work correctly. Try Cleaning it or replacing it. Its ~ 40-45 bucks at a local parts store anc takes about 5 min to change.

Besides the lower intake looking warped, how did the gaskets on it look? did the protrude past where they set, Just did mine the other day as i did the upper before and no fix but after i did the bottom walla!! Problem solved. Maybe someone just re tighten the lower intake trying to solve problem and never changed the gasket, this could possibly make problem worse as the stock gaskets looked uneven to me half below where they set and half trying to seal. remember don't over torque intake after you change gaskets. upper calls for 53-62 inch lbs (just less than 5 lbs)and about twice that for lower.

It's likely the lower intake manifold gaskets... common issue. The kit with the lower intake manifold gaskets, revised timing chain tensioner, and oil volume reduction plug is about $45 from any dealership. Torrie at www.fastpartsnetwork.com has them available too.

update

the lower intake gaskets are wore out so i ordered a new lower intake from
bizrate for 49.99. thought that was well worth the price. we wil see if that fixes this problem. my next issue will be the notorious engine rattle. any help here will be greatly helpful.

the lower intake i ordered has the gaskets made in it verses the factory style.

See my post above.
