I just bought a '98 with the 4.0 L SOHC. I bought it with a rattle. Bad rattle. Thanks to this site and the PO I believe it is the timing chain cassettes.
The truck has 135K miles on it.
The noise is in the front of the engine.
I have done tons of searching on here and found all kinds of useful information. I certainly appreciate all of the hard work you guys have done to post it up for the rest of us to use.
I have questions I cannot find answers to so here goes.

I pulled the right side valve cover. The inside is very clean so I think it has always had good clean oil. The cassette is not broken. It is reddish/brown plastic with a metal backing.
I do not see a recall sticker on the door jamb. Since they are not plastic,

(1)does this at least mean they have been replaced at some point?

(2)Should I leave them?

(3)If I understand it correctly I can do the main chain and tensioners without pulling the intake or valve covers?
I am thinking that because not knowing if they have all been done I was thinking about replacing the cam chain tensioners for the left and right chain and firing the truck up to see if the noise is gone. Not wanting to pull the intake again if I have to pull the front cover off.

(4)Or should I pull the front cover now?

(5)Or should I be pulling the pan and looking for debris?

Thanks guys, I appreciate the input.
