I hit a speed bump at 40 and heard a big groan sound and something metal hit the ground. I got out and found this in the road. What is it? Thanks........
Are you sure it fell of your truck? Maybe you drove over it while driving. I work for the Highway Dept. And it kinda looks like a key top for either a water valve or a gas valve.
Did you look underneath the truck? Is there anything hanging down, loose, or something? It looks like some type of a washer that is on top of something round- like a ball joint or bushings...
It's 2.5" wide, nothing visually hanging down, or broken. Thats the thing, I don't know what it is. Maybe I kicked it up and it hit the wheel well and that was the noise. I just wanted to be sure. Thanks.....
That's what I'm thinking you might have kicked it up from the ground or something. I'm really curious to know what it is. I told you what it looks like to me. But you never know.
Could it be one of the harmonic balancer things that they attach to the differential or t-case or engine? Those usually have round holes though don't they?
it looks too beat up to have come off your truck.... i am betting your suspension bottomed out or it flew up and hit your floorpan and made a thunking sound.......
Is it ceramic and where there any fire hydrants near by? It looks like it came off the top of a fire hydrant (there's on in my front yard) -- I'll snap a pic of what I'm talking about tommorow. My guess it that you drove over it.
I think it came off some other car, but check all of the body mounts to make sure it isnt a big washer that came off after you lost a nut. It looks like a washer that goes next to the rubber mounts on a shock absorber except its too big. Maybe it came from a Peterbilt.
man I thought long and hard about this, and I think I MAY have an answer for you. Check your tensioner. I can't imagine this part would have come off, and I'm not even sure this is true on a 97, but on my 00 F-150, the tensioner uses a 1/2" square hole to loosen and tighten.
Dangit I just went back and read through the posts and it said thats about 2-3", which would make the hole bigger then 1/2"... hmm ok I'm stumped.
It can't be anything vital to the engine or the engine wouldn't run. Honestly, it doesn't look like anything that would be on a truck. Just by looking at the surface of the object, it looks like it has been sitting outside for a while because of the buildup that's developing on it.
You probably hit the bump, heard a clunking noise from the suspension or elsewhere, and thought something came loose. Then you went back and looked and found that random object.
