Hello. I am having a strange problem with my Explorer occasionally. The last time it happened was yesterday. This may be hard to understand, so I will explain it as best as I can. Sometimes it won't start normally (you know - start and stay started), but it will stay started if I keep my foot on the gas all the time and use my other foot on the brake when I need to. The only gauge that really acts goofy when this happens is the battery gauge. If I let up on the gas pedal, it just dies.

The problem usually happens when I've been using the car, and then will start it again - maybe before it cools down? Does it need time to cool down? Am I tearing my car up without realizing what I am doing?

My hubby just had the plugs and wires changed, and the O2 sensor changed.

I've taken it to my local Ford dealership, and tried to explain the problem to them. They tell me they can't tell what it is or do anything unless the check engine light is on. Well that doesn't always happen with this problem.

What could possibly be wrong with my Black Beauty?

Idle Air Control valve

+1 on the Idle Air Control valve....they are notorious for going bad on Explorers. It's an easy fix your husband should be able to do. Also, when was the last time the fuel filter was changed? If it's been awhile go ahead and change it...it's cheap and easy and will help the truck run much better if it's dirty.

Thanks for the info. I will pass it on to my husband. I am so glad I did a google search and found this board. I have read some very interesting things on here.

I have another question. If I need to start a new thread, mods please let me know.

Like I mentioned in my original post, the O2 sensor was changed. The guy that actually changed it told us that the other 2 O2 sensors need to be changed. Do I have 2 more sensors on my baby? If so, where are they at and what do I need to ask for when I go to the parts store? We went to Pep Boys to get them since we were close by their store, and the kid behind the parts counter didn't have a clue what we were talking about and just read to us what was on the computer screen. Is there a diagram somewhere that shows where these parts are that I can look at?

Thanks for your help!

Don't remember how many O2 sensors there are, but if the dealer can't diagnose an obvious IAC valve problem from the symptoms, it's time to go somewhere else...
