I've have a 96 ford explorer, that will start up but will not stay running. The problem actually started on my way to work when my rig died. I assumed it was the alternator, but after putting a new battery in, it still would not stay running. I can get the motor to turn over and stay running for approximately 3 - 20 seconds then it will sputter and die. I have changed the fuel filter and still no help. I have checked the fuses and relays and have found nothing. I can hear my fuel pump working so it can't be that either. Any suggestions?

Try cleaning the IAC. Also, you might want to try unplugging it, and then starting it. The IAC might be screwing up the engine idle.

no it will not stay running if I give it gas. It seems giving it gas makes it die quicker.

OK
Next step is to clean the MAF sensor-you might try disconnecting it to see if it runs better without it before you clean it.
Disconnect the battery while you clean the maf, to clear the code set by running the engine with the MAF disconnected

OH, I should have asked this first--
Is the check engine light iluminated when the engine is running right now? If so-you might have the code read and post back here what the code is before you buy any parts-
