Start of by saying hi. I own a 06 tacoma at the moment, access cab 2wd. I'm looking at a 99 explorer with 140000 miles on the 4.0 engine,4x4, 2 inch lift, shackles in the back, unknown in the front, with new 31 inch 50000 mile tires(depending on how many burnouts I do,lol). He wants 3 k for it which I think its good if it checks out in good shape. I just wanted to talk to people who know these vehicles an know what to look for before I bought it. Thanks in advance for all advice given :)

What I want to know about is...
1. I'm a little concerned about the 4.0 motor. I've read that they have issues with oiling in the valve train. Didn't know what amount of truth there is to this, if there is is there anyway to remedy this? What kinda of mileage are these motors known for( I know it varys motor to motor, not holding anyone to anything, lol).
2. Is there anything I should look for on the vehicle? Known weak points, rust areas, weak interior water proofing, anything at all. I know its older I just try to know as much as possible before I buy something, lol. Figure you guys work on them an have pride in them an will know a few useful things about them.

I say it again, thanks in advance, I really want this to work out, I love the truck an it my first 4x4. I have a lot of experience in auto repair so slightly older doesn't scare me. Just gonna be daily driven so I wanna be sure I can count on it.
Thanks
Zach

I think it would be sohc, did they still put ohv after97? I been reading some more, did the sohc have oil pump issues?

if you like your transmission, i wouldnt do any burnouts. they always seem to be the weak link. that and i believe second gens have a full time 4wd system (65% rear, 45% front) bad idea IMO.
