So got a 2002 explorer with the third row seat, i had an idea to either like remove the seat and replace it or whatever and put a rather large sound system in, i dont really know much about sound system and thats why i am here. I think i want to put two 15 inch subs in a ported box, I know i would need an amp, but what else would i need to get a quality sound system. Money isnt tight but not trying to spend ridculous amounts. I am looking at suggestions on what sub amp speaker box combonitation would give me the best bang. thanks sorry if i screwed this up, first post.

My Two cents...

If you want a good sound system you need to install a capacitor to avoid the problems you will have with the hard hitting notes in the subs. Unless you will use the Explorer for competitions I always recomend to try a "stealth" installation. I don´t know the equipment you already have, but to achieve a "good" sound you will need a monoblock amplifier, a 10´ or 12´ sub (shalow mount), at least 1 farad capacitor. If you want to go further, change the doors speakers (I love my JBL 6x8 in my 98 Ex), and an amplifier for this speakers. Maybe the space is an issue so, in the market exist many options like Alpine amps, those are pretty small and powerfull at the same time. Finally, a pretty strong battery, like Optima and the better wire you can find. This setup wont steal your cargo space and should have a very good sound. But, if you want go LOUD, theres a website "decware.com", I´m not sure, but there are the plans for a box called "the wicked one", you load it with two 10´subs and the bass is awesome, almost umbelivable. This sub box is pretty big but if you prefer huge bass instead cargo space, this is the way. My two cents.

I love DIY Mobile Audio. Lots of tech, install logs and product reviews by people who know what they are talking about. Nobody will hold your hand, but all the answers to your questions are there if you spend the time to search.
Read this to learn why I won't ever rely on a capacitor in my systems.
Sound deadening is important to prevent road noise and panel rattles. Sound Deadener Showdown has lots of good info plus Don is a good guy to deal with.
