I'd go except you mentioned sand. You know as well as I do that sand more than 6-8" deep is my worst terrain. Oh well.....

Alec,

THis is deep sand. The first time I when out there I burried the Navajo to the rockerpanels  Oh well it was the first time I ever used my 4x4.

Maybe I'll still come down to ride-along if you don't mind. I can show you my new "GO!!" button :bounce:

your more than welcome to come down.

I don’t think getting scratched up will be much of an issue this time of year; most of the vegetation should have died off by now. Most any stock 4x4 can make it through if driven with a little common sense, but the sand will swallow just about anything that is 2-wheel drive. However, I think Alec’s Explorer might make it with a set of paddle tires and a full bottle of go fast juice. It would put on a hell of a show, anyway. There are several deep mud holes if there has been any rain at all for those that want something hard to play in. A bypass can usually be found for the real tricky places. The sand is normally enough of a challenge for rigs that are not too wild. Expect water crossings at least 10 inches deep that cannot be avoided. The whole area floods whenever there is a big storm, so the terrain is never quite the same. I have not been down there since the last one, so it could be a little easier or harder. Unlike some other places, it’s legal as long as you stay away from the fences and obey basic traffic rules. Plenty of you folks claim to be from Texas, so speak up and show up.

There is a good description of the Coleto Creek area on the demon4x4 site, so I stole it.

Coleto Creek - From Victoria, TX take 59 southwest until you get to the Coleto Creek bridge. You simply drop under the bridge whereever you can access it and head east along the creek. Stay within the confines of the fences, don't go onto people's yards please. Lots of sand, airing down is a good idea. Water can be deep in spots, be careful.
A Rating of 5 is given, which stands for 'Rutted and/or rocky road. No shelves. Rocks up to 12" and water crossings up to 12" with possible currents. Passable mud. Moderate grades to 15 degrees. 6" holes. Side hill to 20 degrees. 4WD required. No width problems.' - 4x4trails.net

The water crossing at Coleto Creek are pretty mild next to the ones at the Slabs. So that would not be a problem. Brian, Alec has a Heavy foot :nono: which hurt him in the Sand out at the Slabs. The Sand is the only thing I think Alec would have a problem with.

Heavy foot, what are you talking about? Actually, I tried to take it easy out at the slabs. I just have too much darn torque! And only split between 2 wheels, there's only so much tires and a posi can do.

Alec, I know you were trying out at the Slabs. If you were 4wd with a low range you would have done much Better

huh trails ? uuuummmmm!

Good to know someone reads that stuff! :) If you don't mind, I'm going to add your synopsis on there as well. I sure hope my truck is ready for this run, if not I'll be hitching a ride again. :(

I'm gonna try to make it down there for this Kris. I don't ever plan that far ahead so I'll let you know for sure as we get closer.

WOW!!! I have to say I am happy to see the Interest in this run.

Hmmmm, Victoria I believe isn't too far from Houston. What time will the run start? I would love to meet some fellow Texas Explorers.
I just got back this last weekend from my trip to Truckhaven 2002. The wife and I had a blast.

If you guys don't mind Chevy's, I'll ask my friend along too. He should have his new engine in his K5 Blazer by this weekend.

Cya,
John

Some of the guys from the Victoria chapter of Tx4x4 should show up, so there will be more than just Explorers. Usually at least 4 or 5 show up - mostly jeeps but a couple of rangers and a ZR2, too. Size is not really a problem, but a 'burban or supeduty would require some careful driving between the trees.

Around 12 or 1 would be good. That way if someone did have problems then they would be able to get out before dark and people driving in would not have to wake too early.

Aquaman,

Victoria is easy to get to from Houston. Just hit Hwy 59 south and 125 miles later your here.

We have not discussed a good meeting time. The morning is the best.

We can meet at my house.

Take some pics as this is to far for me to drive for the day.

Just bumping this up and checking to see who is going to make it other than Kris and myself. I went down to the creek on Saturday for the afternoon, a little has changed but it's all mainly the same. I pulled a TJ out after a s-blazer tried and broke a cheepo strap. The jeep guy hit one of the water crossings in the wrong spot and got stuck in the middle. He was still running but the water was covering 33's. I also got a flat when a small stick wedged itself in the bead, but other than that the day was great. For those w/2wd that may be thinking about going... don't. I made it about 100 yards before locking the hubs. Before much longer I stopped and dropped the tires to 16psi. There are plenty of hills to play around on but the nasty muddy areas dry enough to get through without any problem.

I noticed the post about "stocker" runs and whatnot, so I figured pointing out that I am not quite stock. My Explorer has a 4 inch lift, JD bumper, and 325/60's, no lockers and almost 200K miles. The other guy that was with me has a Ranger with about the same setup. On Sunday he tried to power up a hill and broke a motor mount and something in the front axle. A stock rig can make it without major problems if driven right - I don't want to scare anyone off.

A lot of guys also run the quads or fourwheelers (which one is it) down there. Not really my thing, but they seem to be popular with some of the local speed demons. I've heard that you need a permit of some sort, a helmet and saftey equipment to be legal - TP&W does give tickets sometimes.

Could ya'll check back in and update your status or reply if interested. What time would work best for you guys?
