Hi. First post here and I'm looking forward to learning a lot from the veterans here on the forum. I'm picking up a "new to me" '16 Explorer Sport in a couple of days. It has the third row seats and I'm wondering it it comes with a spare tire? The dealer said he didn't think so. Is he correct?

There is a spot in the trunk I believe that you can access the spare tire by. It should come with a donut, not a full size spare.

Welcome to the Forum Mark.
I hope that it wasn't a Ford dealership that told you that. If it was, they better get a bit more familiar with the vehicles they are selling. As Zodiac said, it comes with a mini spare tire. Now you know more than the salesperson.;) BTW, you should also check to make sure that the special fuel funnel is there. It is usually stored in along with the jack. It is the only sure way to add fuel from a container.

That is incorrect. All you need is a fuel container that has a nozzle that fits the opening and activates the locking tabs on the sides to release the cap/flap. I have several fuel containers that work just fine to put fuel in my explorers and I haven't used the "special" fuel funnel once.

Thanks for the info. The dealer did show me a new '18 Platinum and it looked like there wasn't room for a spare when the 3rd row seats were folded away. They didn't have any new or used Sport models in stock to look at, but the dealer wasn't able to find the spare on this Platinum one. Is it stowed away somehow underneath the 3rd row seats when they are folded?

With 3rd row seats set in seating position you can access the panel at the bottom of the trunk that covers the spare tire.

Okay, have edited my post by adding "sure". I have tried 2 different fuel container nozzles and neither work although they fit the opening. So unless you have the right one you are out of luck. Thanks for the info.

IIRC the funnel needs to accomplish 2 things to work correctly.
1) open the "capless" filler
2) be long enough that once inserted it goes beyond the air vent opening so all your gas goes into the gas tank.

Some long narrow funnels work for this but stock funnel eliminates possibility for error.

Wow, if these Ford dealerships are really telling this to folks.... time for some serious re-training!

I have some gas cans with flexible plastic nozzles the same width as gas pump nozzles so they trigger the tabs for the capless filler flap and they go into the opening about 2-3" and all the gas makes it's way into the tank.

My other cans are mil-spec jerry cans that I put clear tubing on that is the same diameter as gas pump nozzles so it triggers the capless filler flap and I can adjust how far into the opening I want to insert the tubing - usually just 2-3" which results in no spills.

I haven't tried using the carb compliant gas cans with the hard plastic nozzles, but those may require the funnel.

If those are the yellow plastic nozzles that I have in my red gas containers then those are what I tried.

If the nozzle on the can is smaller diameter than a fuel pump nozzle, then it won't release the capless flap. You can probably find a piece of hose from the hardware store that you can put on the can nozzle that will work or even a piece of garden hose might work in a pinch. There's nothing special about the funnel or anything else - just need the diameter of whatever you want to insert to match a fuel pump nozzle to trigger the capless flap release.

Those funnels are $8.50 on ebay. Even if his is missing, it's not any big deal to replace.

This is the part where I brag that we, PIU owners, have a full-size spare, complete with a TPMS sensor. This is also the part where I conveniently forget to mention that we don't have a third seat.

I recently purchased a funnel at our local Walmart that looks almost exactly like one that comes with spare in our XLT. It appears to work just like the Ford one. Used it a couple times. Works great.
