spare tire

I have a 96 XLT that i got 2 weeks ago and the guy before me used the spare but never put it back and when i tried to wheel the spare tire holder down it only came down a couple inches and then stopped and wouldnt go down any more. Any ideas???

welcome to the site, the winch maybe rusted or siezed or broken... first try wd-40 and see if that helps... pull and tug on it a little bit... if it doesnt work, look for a new winch assembly

I can't get my spare down because the tip of the extension rod that fits into the winch/jack, broke off. Local junkyard didn't have one. I can remember if it's a flat piece or square or what. Can someone tell me what the end should look like to fit the spare tire winch?

It is really pretty flat. You could use a really big flathead screwdriver to get hte winch to roll down, but you would not have enough leverage to use a screwdriver to use the jack. I think that is what you asked....

uhm, I believe there is a small hook type thing on the end of it. it goes into the car jack also.
