I installed an aftermarket JVC in my first gen, during installation I noticed that my driver side rear speaker was not working... I wound up playing with the speaker connection between the OEM harness and the aftermarket harness and sounds came back, now that speaker is working at times, and popping and crackling at others.

I assumed it was a poor connection, so I was going to put some type of conductive grease in the connector. However, a friend surrgested it may be a short in the connector... any suggestions? I could cut and solder, but I was hoping for something a little easier

There may be a loose connection somewhere in the wiring, either the head unit to speaker wire connection, the speaker wire to speaker connection, or even a spot along the wiring from the head unit to the speaker where the wire jacket has worn through or been damaged by a screw or sharp edge.

Re-check all the crimp/press-fit connectors to be sure they're tight and not wobbling or loose, then check the wiring itself. It might be easier to check by using some spare speaker wire, going from the head unit to the speaker with just the new wire and seeing if the same thing happens. If so, it's either the terminals on the speaker, the speaker is going, or that channel on the head unit's amp is bad.

I had that same problem, it ended up being the factory amp that was on its last leg...try bypassing the amp and see if that fixes it...good luck!
