I am on something of a budget, but I know that I want to at least upgrade the front 2 door speakers. Now, from this I have 2 questions:

1) I am looking at sony's 5x7 mids that have a built in tweeter, are those pretty good (they sounded good in the store) or is there something better for around the same price or maybe a tad more?

2) Would it be better for the overall sound of the car to upgrade the others as well, or would that only help out the sound for those in the back seat (I rarely have people sitting back there anyway)

thanks, tell me some personal stories about what you have done with your doors please

You don't need pricey speakers in the rear, but they do need some help. I like Jensen 3 ways from Walmart for $40. They offer good bass (other budget 6x8s tend to be tinny) and decent highs and provide good fill.

For the front get at least 3 ways, and the money you spend will be worth it.

I found that it is better to replace all four speakers and to replace all four with the same type. I had rockford in the front and infinety in the rear and the sound was horrible. I then changed the rears to match the front and wow, what a difference. Cleaner crispier sound. As far as price and quality of sony's and comparable's I really can't help you.

whats the differance between 3-way and 2-way?

the sony's sounded ok in the store and they are 2way, but i found some pioneer 3 ways for about the same price somewhere else

whats the diff?

More sound range and separation. 3way have 3 speakers, while 2way have 2.

i highly recommend going a different route than the others suggested.

i would remove or leave the stock rears and fade all the way to the front and run some 5.25" or 6.5" seperates up front. There are many sets of components you can get into in the 75-150 range. i think you'll be much happier after going that route.

that takes customization and running power from an external amp though, the sony 5x7's can run just fine on the 23 watts rms from my deck i believe

i might do that some other time though, when i have more money and time than i do now, i really just wanna figure out what are the best, non expensive speakers i can stick in my doors, and if all doors is way better than 2 doors

Crutchfield is running Infinity reference 5x7's for $79 a pair right now.

those are 6x8's though, and mine are 5x7's i believe

and there doesn't seem to be much difference btwn those and the sony 5x7's, do correct me if i am wrong

6x8 and 5x7 will both fit, I dont know about the specs.

you don't need to customize or run an amp to run the components...

crutchfield sell the adapter so the 5.25s screw right in and why do they need an amp more than the 5 by 7s?>

ahh, i see

the way you made it sound they needed more power than that, my bad

hrm, that is a thought, gives me something to think on, i did not realize that was a posibility

actually, components probably will sound better with less power than coaxials

component: seperate speakers with crossovers: better sound
coaxial: all the speaker components in one unit: easier install, usually cheaper.

ok, coaxial is what I am prolly gonna go with for the moment

now, will 6x8 speakers fit for sure in the explorer slot (1995)? Some sites say 5x7 opening, some say 6x8, and most say that most 5x7 speakers fit 6x8 holes, but does it go both ways, can 6x8 fit most any 5x7 or 6x8 hole?

I ask this cause I am leaning towards this (link below) pioneer speaker over the sony 5x7 but it says 6x8 on the size. Help? Thanks

5x7 and 6x8 are essentially the same. Your 95 officially has 5x7s, but 6x8s fit. Very rarely you'll have to slightly file a bolt hole or speaker hole, but that's rare and easy.
