Welcome to this forum! Does your cruise control, and anti lock braking system work? Does your transmission lack overdrive, or slip in other gears? The sensor on the differential emits a series of pulses to represent a signal when your vehicle is in motion. Check your fuse panel in addition to the other previously mentioned items.

If everything else in the previous list checks out OK, then check the connector on the dashboard. If there is corrosion built up on the contacts, it will cause problems like you are having. The gauge could also be defective.
