Alright guys, I can't find the front drive shaft speed sensor anywhere!
My speedo doesn't work and I'm throwing a speed sensor code. I already replaced the rear, no fix, where is the front???

Thanks a bunch guys! Any links to pictures of the sensor on the tc?

Only the rear speed sensor on the transfer case is used for the speedometer, I believe. If you replaced the sensor and it still doesn't work... then it could be the harness, etc.

Also, at about 80+- MPH the speedo will bounce from zero up to about 65, and bounce back and forth until I speed up or slow down past that point.

I'm starting to get extremely frustrated, honestly.

Do I need to tear the dash down adn look for a broken/loose wire?

You can pull the cluster out without too much trouble. There's instructions on some of the indiglo guage swap threads you could search for.

You installed a whole new sensor and gear mech?

I pulled the sensor out (1 bolt) it had the gear mech (little plastic gear?) on, I moved that to the new sensor, and dropped it in, in it's place. Reconnected the electronic connector.

the wires appear fine.

Do the '97's have the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) in the transmission?, or was that a later model part?

Yeah, 2wd it was in the tranny, 4WD it was in the tcase. In 98 they moved it to the rear axle.

Well, today I tried a new guage cluster (dealers reccomendation) and still nothing.

Anyone else have any ideas? ECU? I'm at a complete loss, and I'm in bad shape here.

The VSS is different from the speed sensors used for Auto 4x4. It is inside the t/f case as Section525 indicated. Did they look at that? Are all the wires running to the t/f case connected properly?
