Hi,

My lower ball joints are toast. The mechanic suggested Spicer. My question is does spicer have more than one brand of ball joint? I did some poking around and found ball joints supposedly made by spicer under the Allsafe name. Is this true? And if the Allsafe is made by spicer whats the diffference? Because I can get a pair of the Allsafe for the price of one spicer ball joint the mechanic quoted me.

TIA
Deak

Just make sure you get ball joints with grease fittings on them.

I have never hear of this "Allsafe" brand. Perhaps Spicer re-sells to Allsafe, and they are the same ball joint. But perhaps not.

My alignment guy says that Spicer and Moog balljoints are not the same. He believes Moog are better ball joints. He sees a lot more vehicles than I do so I figure he knows something...

Spicer = Dana

Moog = Federal Mogual

Normally, i'd trust dana over federal mogual, but Moog is some good stuff.

Dana is going out of business too :thumbdwn:

both federal mogual and dana filed for chapter 11, Dana more recently. You will see moog fall off before spicer.

Fed Mogul is closing a plant near here. Dana is going Chap11? Doesn't Dana still make Jeep axles? Who is going to make Jeep axles now?

That doesn't mean they're going out of business. It just means they're filing for Bankruptcy reorganization.

yep, both companies technically file for bankrupsty so they can reorganize and come back.

Ball Joint Replacement

Need to replace lowers on my 98 X and the factory manual says that the whole control arm must be replaced. :D Is there a ball joint that I can replace without doing the whole arm bit ? The same goes for the top. Is that true also.
Thanks

Mr. Asparagus (hehe) although I am no 2nd gen expert, I do believe that the control arm and lower ball joint are sold as one piece...

The top I don't know about...

The 2nd gen lower control arm and balljoint can be seperated with a balljoint press, even though the haynes manual says otherwise. The upper however does need to be replace entirely.
