splicing the power point

i came up with the bright idea to splice the power point and put a 2nd cigarette lighter in the center console. so what i did was take the top of the console off and cut the wires going to the power point on the passengers side. i then installed the 2nd cigarette lighter and spliced the wiring.

i think i must be overloading the fuse. i then disconnected the factory power point and just kept the new cigarette holder connected and voila it worked!

so a couple of questions for anyone more electronically inclined than myself....

1) will this cause me to continue to blow 30amp fuses (located in the power distribution box)?

2) can i even do this and if so what do i have to do to make this work?

3) does the ignition have to be on to supply power to the power point? i know the factory cigarette lighter doesn't need the ignition.

you must have hooked the wire backwards
+ to + and - to-
it shouldn't blow fuses if like that

You've either got it wired wrong or you have a short somewhere.

I installed another accessory outlet in the cargo area and spliced into the factory one for power. I can put a cigar lighter in both at the same time without blowing the fuse.

Make sure you have the center part at the rear to the hot (+) wire and the body of it to ground (-).

The ignition does not have to be on to use the accessory outlet.

thanks ..... i've triple checked the wiring and it all looks like it is wired (+) (-) correctly. the grey/red wire is wired to the center part and the black is wired to the body. the funny thing is the new lighter worked the first time i tried it (without the power point being connected)....i then tried it again after posting and blew yet another fuse.....how do i check to see if there is a short somewhere?

Just inspect the wires and see if anything is crossed that would cause the fuse to blow. unshilded wire, or I suspect something in the power point.

Use a test light. Connect the clip on the light to ground. Don't use the same ground connection as your new outlet, just clip it to bare metal somewhere. Touch the tip of the light to the body of the outlet. If it lights up, you have a problem. Also touch it to the rear center section of the new outlet, it should light up then. If it doesn't light up then, but does when you touch the body you've got the wires backwards.

Did you cut the wires to the stock outlet? If so, test it the same way to make sure you connected the right wires back together.

Also check where you spliced the wires together. Make sure no wire is bare.
