Sport Blowing white smoke???

Check your coolant cold every morning, and note if the level is dropping any. It doesn’t take much coolant to make white smoke.

I have a 2015 sport with 60k miles. Mine did the same thing about a year ago. Then it did it again yesterday. One common thing I've noticed with these threads is that it was preceded by some sitting and idling. I was sitting in a park with the a/c on for about 30 min. Then when I took off, it was spewing white smoke like crazy. After about a mile I pulled over. There was no strong smell but it was so thick I couldn't see out of the back window. There were no warning lights and performance was not diminished. I got to my destination about 4 miles away and it had mostly dissipated. Later last night on the ride home it was fine. I checked it again this morning and it was fine. The last time it happened I took it to the dealership and they couldn't find anything wrong. So I've had it happen twice. Both times after sitting idling for a while, and both times it dissipated after 10 min of driving. It was at least a year in between instances. I dunno.

Hello all....haven't found any other threads quite possible I missed one. So my '17 Sport has approximately 25,000 miles....have been on point with the oil changes and scheduled maintenance. As of late I'm having a white chalky smoke issue. Only happens when I sit in the car idling for about 15-20 minutes. For example the Mrs and I will be doing our usual run-around. She'll run into the store and I'll wait in the truck idling for about 15-20 minutes. She gets back in the truck..I'll put it in drive and pull out....I noticed a cloud of smoke behind me.. .a white chalky smoke not steam that sometimes lasts anywhere from a block to a block and a half. This happens just about every time I sit idling in the truck for about 15-20 minutes and then proceed out of the parking spot. I have an appointment scheduled with the Dealer just curious if you all have any insight on this...thanks!!!

Just did a 'Search' on "White Smoke" in the 'Discussion' subforum and found this thread to which yours was moved.

Does it have a bluish tinge to it at all? Almost sounds like it could be burning some oil. Could be a slight leak at a seal somewhere. Does it change depending on the throttle position? Less smoke at light throttle, more smoke at heavier throttle?

No longer under warranty?

My strong bet is a turbo issue.

With both oil and coolant going through the housing, it sounds like early bearing/seal failure in one or both wheels.

While this was many years ago, on a much older (and simpler) car, I suddenly had white smoke pouring out of the tailpipe while on a cross-country trip. Turned-out that there was a vacuum modulator on the transmission that had ruptured inside, and, since it was connected to the engine via a vacuum line, it started sucking transmission fluid all the way up the line and into the engine's intake, causing the engine to then be burning transmission fluid (and smoking heavily). I have no idea if that kind of technology is still being used in the transmissions of today (possibly not), but I share the story to encourage that sometimes thinking outside of the box can lead you to a surprising cause...

Same experience as you two, 2-3 times so far. Idling for a while was the common theme for me. 2014 Sport with ~70k miles.

Did you ever receive a diagnosis? Mine is doing the same thing.

A common thread here is white smoke AFTER sitting idling for a long period of time. I have not seen in this thread anyone mention the intercooler. The intercoolers on these vehicles are extremely efficient--almost too much so. Ford had to "install" a cardboard block over the front of a good part of the intercooler to keep water from "puddling" in the intercooler. The engine would then ingest a large amount of water at once and hydrolock.

While idling, I am sure a lot of condensation develops in the intercooler. When taking off, this condensation gets sucked into the engine due to higher air velocity through the intercooler. The condensation goes through the combustion process and sent out the tailpipes as white smoke.

I am not saying don't keep an eye on coolant or oil. But I also don't believe the turbo is about ready to shoot parts everywhere or the engine is on its last legs. Be aware these are turbo engines with intercoolers--they act somewhat differently than normally aspirated engines; they don't do the same things.

I haven't heard that before but it makes sense. The first time it did it I thought it was more white-colored but the last time it seemed much darker. Smoked like crazy for a mile or so.

Yes, if I remember correctly they re-progammed one of the modules. I can call them tomorrow and get back to you. Whatever they did I never had another issue with that.

Thank you very much!

Thank you very much!

Ok, so I just spoke to my service dept. The PCV Elbow assembly was replaced and the PCM was reprogrammed. There was a service bulletin out for that issue, TSB# 17-2255. Like I said, once that work was done I never had another issue with the white smoke...hope this helps!!!

Thank you for the TSB #. It has been added to the TSB thread with a link to the TSB.

Hey Peter you're welcome, glad I could be of assistance!!!
