Does anyone know if the rears from a sport trac and a regular explorer are the same? I am looking to swap to 3.55 gears and I know some explorers came with them. It would be a lot cheaper to swap out the rears than buy all the parts.

as far as i know the 2nd gen sploders have the same sized ford 8.8 as ours

Yep, I have a complete rearend minus my 4.10 ring and pinion and disc brake setup (off my ST) from a '99 Explorer that had 10k miles on it installed on my 2003 Sport Trac.

IIRC, You're running a 32" tire right? 3.55s should work out good or you.

I may have a front diff with 3.55s you can have, let me check and make sure.

Thanks, guy's. I thought they were the same but wanted to make sure before heading to the junkyard.

Yup, 32''. I would have liked to go to a 3.27 but they don't make them for the front diff.

We can go 3.08 rear/3.07 front.

I figured I'd try out the 3.55 first because of cost mainly. If I don't like them I'll go to the 3.08.

now i might be wrong on gearing but if you size up in tires say stock XLS tires 235-70R16 and go to 285-75R16 approx. 32X11 and you start with a 3.73 rear wouldn't you want to go larger number say 4.10 or 4.56 to equal out to stock performance?

Yes, If we were talking about gas engines. We are talking about our Cummins swaps.

I picked up a Jeep D35 rear for $50 that has 3.07s. I kept the carrier and gears. One of these days I'm going to swap them into a spare front housing I have to see if it works.

Newbie question

Can I jump in as a newbie.....I have a 02 sport trac 4x4 with 4:10 gears and have been told I can only use 01-02 sport trac rear axle assy. Can I in fact use one out of a regular explorer and what years will work. Thanks

yes the 2nd gen sploder rear end works only difference is that the sploder has a 3rd shock mounted from the forward right side of the diff to the right side frame
