My 04 sport trac has 93k miles. I drove it to work fine like normal. No engine noises or rough idle. Leaving work i start my Trac and it instantly started rough. Sounds like a dead cylinder and i can feel it on the exhaust. It would vibrate bad coming to a stop or leaving a stop. No engine light came on and never has. I even scanned for codes using my xcal3 and nothing. I spray cleaned the maf. I had the plugs and wires changed and same results. I was told it had low compression on one cylinder and a new motor was needed.

Is this possible? Should i be looking for something else that can cause this issue? The no check engine light has me so confussed.

Any help?

Make sure all your vacuum hoses are properly connected. My '94 Explorer would regularly blow a vacuum line off at start-up, and it would run rough like you describe.

I realize the OP posted a month or so ago but I had somewhat of the same happen this past week. The wife started the S/T and backed it out onto the street. She parked it there for 10-15 minutes and when she went to start it the engine would barely run. White smoke came out of the exhaust and there was a definet miss.

We left the S/T parked on the street for a couple of hours and when I went to start it....lo and behold it fired right up. No miss, no stumble, no white smoke. Took it for a spin and it ran just fine. Neighbor came over with his scan meter. Even though I didnt have a "check engine light" on he found that there was a "miss" history on the #2 cylinder. With 202k miles on the plug wires Im going to change them out. The engine had been replaced (with new plugs) 70k miles ago...... timing chain cassette failure...... imagine that.

Sure is, POS 4.0l V6 has a design flaw. Look up "death rattle" for more info.

Probably this ^ engine probably jumped time. POS SOHC engine design
