2004 Explorer Sport Trac
Alright so I have seen pics of subs in the back of a sport trac but i was wondering how to do this. I have an '04 sport trac w/ the pioneer system w/ a sub in the back but I cant find any kind of enclosure small enough that will fit back there. I was thinking the compact style 8" subs but like i said i just cant seem to find an enclosure or box or whatever.
ANY IDEAS WELCOME!

Thanks

you may want to think about something smaller then 8" maybe an array of 6's then you could possible get the box at least close to the optimal cubic inches for the speaker. A well tuned 6" will probably sound worlds better then a crammed 8"

but I don't know how much room you have to work with since I don't have a trac.

yeah i was thinkin that
but dont know where to get a shallow 6" sub
well i checked real quick and its about 3 3/4"
so its not very big but ive seen a sport trac w/ subs back there
i just hope someone can tell me how they did it

I've seen a few different boxes for adding subs into the sport trac. There is a box on the internet for the sub under the rear passenger seat and there is this box. I've seen a box like that one that used the entire rear section but that one is kind of better because you can also place the amp back there. Only problem is the pretty trim/plastic in the back would need to be removed. You can fit up to 2 10's in there. As for subs to stuff in there pioneer shallow mount subs sound really good and take very little power. If you didn't want to do that box pioneer makes a shallow 8 that is actually free air so no box is actually needed.

that box looks pretty cool :) but it doesnt cover th amp area at all which makes it look a lil sloppy :(
i think what ive seen is probly those free air subs mounted w/ the plastic behind the seats still in tact
that does give me some ideas maybe i can check out those free air subs and see what i can do w/ them back there n just make a mount but not enclose them but i do wanna see if i can make it even punch on both sides by fitting the amp in the middle
i can probly fabricate my own box cuz my uncle is a woodworker so we got all the tools, i mean ALL the tools

What amp area?

No matter where you put the subs it will feel the same throughout the vehicle. Bass is omnidirectional.

Did a little more searching, most are the same idea though with one sub firing up or down under the seat...

They actually have the packages to put a sub under the passenger seat on ebay with the sub, amp and box all in one deal. Personally I'd just build a box in the back there that looks better than what is pictured and take out the entire plastic in the way back. Just keep in mind you have to find the internal volume of the box and get the best sub to fit. For small spaces these subs would be excellent but I still haven't even got word as for the price. The pioneer shallow mount subs are nice and cheap and take little power. I installed 2 in a single cab 04 silverado and was shocked with the sound.

The amp area i was talkin about was from the pic you had a link to w/ the boxes and the plastic cut off w/ the amp on the passenger side and the subs in the middle and drivers side.

I know it may sound dumb but im a lil OCD when it comes to things being symetrical. IDK why but i like things to be as even as possible or else it annoys me. i know i wont be able to see them but ill still know theyre there. :D

well i like your idea about the boxes underneath the seats cuz there is room under there. what are the differences in upward and downward facing in terms of rattle or anything like that?

thanx

yeah i looked into those and they seem to be probly the best thinnest sub i can get other than jl's big 13.5" or 12" subs that are the same depth
how do you like your pioneers? what kind of power are you running to them and through what type of amp?

I really wanna put them behind the seats but space is just so limited!
I know i can cut the plastic and put them there but then id have to remount the jack and tire iron pieces somewhere maybe under the seats.
If i do put them under the seats though i can use the space where the factory sub is as storage for a recovery strap n hitch :)

decisions decisions

You more or less hit the nail on the head! You can relocate the jack/tire iron/recovery strap n hitch to under the seat! Remove the stock sub and amp that is in the back behind your seat and remove the plastic. Don't cut the plastic just in case you plan on selling and don't want the system to go with it! Just remove the back panel and get building the box for back there. You can build the box however you'd like to fit back there and it can be asymmetrical to keep you sane! Mount the amp in the middle and your good to go. The box I linked that goes back there said somewhere around 5" depth so there are quite a few subs you can fit. Personally the jl brand in general is overrated if you ask me. I don't think you'd even ever miss the plastic back there when the seat is up. If your uncle works with wood though I'm sure you guys could fit it with finishing touches!

I don't actually own the shallow mount pioneers I installed them in a guys truck. They were powered by a cheap mono amp but sounded great. He was happy with the install so I was happy. I was shocked by the sound the subs put out, I was quite a bit skeptical at first. The 12's only need 350 rms a piece while the 10's I think are like 250 and the 8 only needs 120 watts rms. The amp I used was an SSL 1Fd1500 1500 watt that the guy could afford. I had to install a cd player, gm wiring harness (to keep chime's-over 100 bucks), dash kit, front and rear door speakers, sub amp, 2-12's, 2 boxes, a capacitor and install for 1000 bucks so I used the amp that would best power the subs and didn't get anything special. In the end though the amp sounded great and I wouldn't hesitate to put the soundstorm stuff in my vehicle after using it. I surely would never spend the money they want on jl over it (long story.)

The subs didn't hit deep like some subs but for limited space they sound great and I'd put them in my mountaineer if I didn't get RE audio cheap.

Hey I found this thread

http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=202621&highlight=stereo

The post from chad551 is his system and it looks like about what were talking about doing. He didn't cut too much plastic, just the bottom part then covered it but I plan on keeping this truck for as long as it will last me. :)
Im putting alot of money into it as stated on this thread.

http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=218423

I understand about the JL's I was just saying that theyre the only other ones w/ such shallow mounting depth but it appears that chad551 used kickers, so apparently the 1/2 inch wont matter.

BTW, Rockford makes a shallow mount sub, it's with there P3 line of subs. They sound pretty good. I only installed a few of them while helping out another shop, so never got to play with them too much.

Deepest one is 3.625"s

P3 shallow mount subs

yeah but I think if I do like chad did then Ill have to use 8's and those are 10's n 12's idk yet though. I msgd him and am waiting for a reply.

Thanks

here is some pics on my cardomain. sounds good too. people don't think its one ten.

Dang your truck looks nice. The box looks good, but like I said earlier Im a lil OCD about things bein symmetrical :p: so I dont think that will work.
Thanks though

How do you like the K&N?
Is there any difference in power or mpg?

That is one nice sporttrac! What'd you do with the drop kit? And one last question, do your rims/tires stick out a bit? The rims that came on my mounty have 275 45 20's and they kind make it look like a mexican ride...they've grown on me but I can't say I would have spent my money on them at discount tire!

What are the cu ft. requirements on the RF shallows? I know the kicker cvt's still require a good sized box according to kickers site...
