I am under the impression that the used x i bought does not have airbags. the light is going on, but there is a beeping sound from the dash and i read that it could be something with the airbags. is there anyone way i can visually check to see if the airbags are there? thanks

What year?

If it's a 2000 it should have air bags. If not, it must have been wrecked and somebody was too cheap to replace them.

You can take apart the steering wheel to see if the bag is there. You must make sure they here no power going to the bag when you do this, or it could fire on you. I think you can check the passenger air bag by remove the glove box. Not sure on that though.

i am sure it was in a wreck, but im wondering if the bags were replaced, but there is a sensor problem

If the airbags blew and were not replaced, that could explain your srs light. If the sensors are still intact and connected, your computer is doing a self diag on the srs system. That light may be telling you there is a problem. No airbags=problem. If you dont have airbags any longer, then disconnect the srs system to turn off that light.

I would recommend you spend the money and have someone certified to work on airbags do this for you. They are very important safety items and very expensive to replace if you blow one accidentally.

Good Luck.........

Well, you can see plain as day if the air bags wern't replaced.
It blows a big hole in the center of your steering wheel and passneger dash.

What possibly has happend is IF the bags were deployed, they were replaced but there still is a fault code.

Some folk here have had a code reguarding their side air bags.

There is not a lot of easy checks in a air bag system.
I would call a few repuatable collision repair shops and see if they have an air bag code scanner.
Get it checked out. Lemmie know what they come up with, it is possible I could walk you through the solution.

I've heard of people just putting panels in to make it look like there is a bag there, but there is no bag in behind.

I have seen that too. People buy wrecked cars at auctions and try to sell them off as having a clean title.

monmix-ok cool, ill have that done asap and let you know what they say.

I am going on vacation. I won't be back here till Sunday evening.

MONMIX- Ok i had the bags checked out, they are there however: the passenger side bag needs to be replaced due to the a short in the bag. the drivers side bag does not fit the clockspring. any thoughts, comments, suggestions?

i was thinking about fixing the drivers side, and disconnecting the passengers side.

Let me do the easy part first. Check to see if you even have a side air bag. More than a few people here ( my self included ) have had an air bag code about the side air bag when I / we don't even have side air bags.
You should see a pig tail under the seat with a bright yellow connector. If it goes to nothing, obviously you don't have side bags. Disconnect the batery, wait about ten to fifteen min. Pop the cover off the end of the pig tail. ( push the button on the connector ) blow in there a few times get the dust out, put the cover back on. Make sure the wire is out of harms way. Not in the seat track or nothiong. I did that and it cleared the code right away. I did not even need my code reader.

I am 99% sure Ford clock springs run the whole 9 yards.
Check your horn and cruse control. If they work your clock spring is fine. It still may not be connected to the bag itself. Again disconnect the battery, wait aboutn fifteen min. Behind the steering wheel are two little caps. Pop then out with a tiny flat head screwdriver or knife. There should be two 8mm bolts behind there.
Pop them out and the air bag should come out.
You will see a wire again with a bright yellow connector
( yes it is a standardised thing. All cars after a certian year all SRS wire conncetors must have a bright yellow connector ) See if it is connected. Note that it can only go on one way and one way only. Study it first for signs of damage or menting. A lot of times that connector just melts to noting after an air bag deployment.
Re connect it if all looks well, reinstall the bag. Connect the battery. When you get in to check your code slide the seat all the way back incase that sucker goes off.
It is unlikely that it will but it is some what possible.
turn the key to run but do not start. Watch the light do its test. If it goes out, well jack pot. If not let me know and we will see what is next.

Let me know if I can help any more.

That reasurring!!

I don't think he meant that he had side seat air bags, but the front pass. side (in dash) air bag.

You could just sit in the back seat and reach up and turn the key. Much safer that way.

voat- yeah that is what i mean, an air bag on the side that the passenger sits on, in the dash.

Oh okay.
disconecting the pass air bag you will still have the light on the dash. In the event of an accident your passenger may not appriciate the lack of an air bag.
