Which Explorer?

1996 Ford Explorer 4.0 XLT 4WD model with around 190,000 miles

What's the issue?

If I drive around and let the Explorer reach operating temperature, and then turn it off and let it sit for around 15 minutes, it will crank and start, but then stall within seconds, or not start at all. If I only let it sit for around 5 minutes, however, it will start. If I wait around 15 minutes it will take around an hour until it will start again.

Symptoms

  • Audible whistle from engine bay most prominent at 2250 RPM
  • After being ran for awhile the catalytic converter has an audible whine, though the new EGR valve might have solved that.

What have I done to resolve the issue?

In the past year I've replaced..

  • IAC Valve
  • EGR Valve
  • Fuel Filter
  • Cleaned MAF
  • New DPFE Sensor
  • Front two O2 sensors

What can be done to reduce the prominence of the issue

Occasionally holding at WOT while cranking will make it start, but it will idle roughly unless I hold the peddle down. It is less likely to start when hot, though.

HELP

Has anyone experienced a similar issue? I am really struggling to find the cause.

Could it be the crank sensor, despite it occasionally starting if I WOT during ignition?

What do you have for codes?

Have you unplugged the IAC and seen if anything changes? I'd test the fuel pressure. I don't understand there being no codes. Does the CE light illuminate in the key on position?

I have unplugged the IAC and nothing changed unfortunately. Yes the CEL comes on when the key is in the on position. Could there be hidden codes not triggering the CEL?

I'm also thinking it could be the fuel pump. I'll have to check the fuel pressure

If the problem is temperature related, you might also want to look at the coolant temp sensor that feeds info to the PCM (not the one that feeds the temp gauge). Good luck.
