I have a '97 Explorer and it just started to stall out when I slow down to stop at a traffic light on most occasions. It starts to make a rattling sound and then the engine just dies.

It wills start back up every time, but when I put it in Drive, it usually dies again quickly. It seems if I give it 30 seconds or a minute before I crank it up again, then it's more likely not to die before I can give it some gas and get it going. It seems to run fairly well when not slowing down or going from Park to Drive....no problems shifting besides that.

I took it to one place and they couldn't figure out what was wrong and the second one said it was probably the Torque Converter and referred me to a transmission shop.

This is an old vehicle with 240K miles on it and a lot of other problems. I don't know if I would want to spend too much on it to get it fixed. But just wanted to see if anyone had any idea that it may not be the torque converter and something else that would be less expensive to fix and not require the entire transmission to be removed.

Thanks for any ideas or help..
