stalling

i have a 97 4.0 ohv and im having problems with it stalling...it sounds like its missing so i changed the spark plugs and it didnt help...i just dont wat to throw any more money in the thing until i have an idea waht is going on

Welcome to the forum. Does the truck ever make a whistling sound when coasting that goes away when you hit the gas? It's common for the IAC(idle air control)valve to fail on Explorers. When they go bad they generally cause the truck to stall, or make it so it is hard to start. Some of them can be cleaned.

both really....it starts fine but when u go to put it in gear it will stall when its cold...it stalls randomly...usually when im idling and and hit the gas it will stall or come really close to stalling

Welcome to this forum! Do you smell gas when this happens? Sometimes a bad ECT sensor could flood the engine with too much gas. A defective fuel pressure regulator could do the same thing. Check the fuel pressure, and see if there is any gas in the vacuum lines. Clean the MAF sensor too. Do you have any engine codes?
