Hello forum,

1999 XLT Explorer

Recently, I went to start the truck (which normally runs and starts perfectly) and when I turn the key to position 1 all seems well but when I go to position 2 for the actual start I get not a peep. However, I tried a few times a few minutes later and she started up just like normal. A few days later I am back to no start as described above.

Caveats -
a. I hadn't driven the truck in about a week or so. But before it was parked I filled the fuel tank.

b. Just before this problem my wife had tried to use our 2nd set of keys and this was the first time we had the starting problem. When I came home it worked fine, and then didn't. (this may mean nothing)

c. I cleaned the terminals & checked the cable tightness on the starter itself.

Please advise,

Joe

Sounds to me like a bad ignition switch, or maybe the switch slipped out of adjustment. The actual switch is located on top of the steering column near the firewall. Locate the switch, try to move it. If loose you can try tightening it. If not loose, I would check into replacing it.
