I dont know if it is my starter that is going bad, but when i start up my X,it seems like it struggles to turn over. for example: I started my X this morning and the starter made a weird grind noise when i turned the key, then i tried it again and it started up.

Could be...if the bendix gear on the starter isn't popping out far enough to make sufficient contact with the flywheel, I could see your problem.

You could always remove the starter (easy) and inspect for damage.

If the starter drive is grinding against the flex plate, STOP! You will damage the flex plate and have to replace it. Repair this immediately. If damage has already occurred, then bite the bullet and replace the flex plate too or you will end up damaging the new starter too.

By the way, there will probably be three places in the flex plate you need to look at. All 120 degrees apart. Funny how an engine wants to shut off in one of those spots.

ok, thanks guys for the info. Where would the starter be located at exactly? also can it be the starter solenoid?

ok so this morning went to start my explorer and it took 3 times till it actually started. it sounded like it kinda just kept spinning.

You need a new starter

And hopefully not a flexplate too

what exactly is a flex plate? thanks guys!
