Sometimes, probably 2 out of 5, when I turn my key over to start my X the starter makes this strange clicking sound and the engine won't turn over. I hear the fuel pump kick on and my gauges flick like the engine is going to be next, but when I turn the key all the way over all I get is that clicking sound from under the hood. I usually just wait a few seconds, turn the key back and then turn it over again and this time the engine fires up with its normal spunk. Having a bunked starter isn't worrying me, I just want to know why it makes thta sound sometimes. Any thoughts?

The clicking sound is the starter selonoid engaging. It is an electro-mechanical device that tells your starter that you have turned the key to start, and also tells the circuit when your starter has completed its job.
Sounds like you need a new starter. It is a simple task to do. But first check all your connections at the battery, remove and clean the terminals, and followithe hot wire to the starter itself. Make sure there are no breaks, corrosion spots, etc.
Also when replacing the starter, note if there are any shims in place.
