We can not find the starter relay (solenoid) on our 5 liter v8 1999 ford explorer xlt.

We back tracked the cables and still can't find it. Maybe it doesn't even have one?

We have replaced the starter so that solenoid is good. The wiring seems to be fine although we have not check every inch yet.

We youtubed it and have researched the internet and still nobody shows where it is.

I'm a fairly good mechanic who's not afraid to get greasy so this one has me stumped.

We came upon this forum and registered to find out if anyone knows where the starter relay (solenoid) is. ?

Your help would be very appreciated. Thanks!

I'm brand new here but If I can I will video the job and post it here so others can get help too.

I've never physically seen it but on the 5.0 it is mounted on the firewall.

the 1999 5.0L V8 starter solenoid is located on the starter motor. the positive battery cable runs right to it. if there's a starter relay, i would think it would either be in the power distribution box or mounted on the firewall. a relay would not be connected to the battery in any way. the purpose of any relay is to transfer power from a thin gauge wire to a thicker gauge wire. so a starter relay (in this application) would transfer power from the ignition switch to the starter solenoid, energizing it. the starter solenoid transfers power from the battery to the starter motor and it also extends the starter gear into the flywheel/flexplate gear.

It's right behind the battery...well almost, look close and you will find it. 95-01 all use the same relay/solenoid. Mounted to the inner fender.
