I've got the large wire and small wire hooked up to the starter on my 1991 explorer. No battery in it just using jumper cables to start it. The starter still stayes engaged when the motor is running unless I disconnect the small wire from the battery cable that comes down from the starter selonoid. Once I disconnect the small wire the starter will disengage and the engine does stay running. The battery cables are from the dealer the starter end does have the large cable and the small wire that also hooks to the starter. Any Ideas?

You have a bad starter solenoid.

Pull your starter and have it tested to be sure.

It's a new starter and selonoid

It sounds like your small wire is still getting power. I am not quite following what your saying with your wiring setup, but if the small wire gets power, your starter will stay running because the solenoid works like so: you have a constant power source coming in, (your large wire), and a power source that is only on when you want the starter to turn (your small wire), when your small wire is powered, a switch is well switched and your solenoid passes the power from the large wire through to the starter, and viola, it spins as long as your starter is good. Sorry if I am misinterpreting your situation and I hope this helps a bit.
