I have a new problem that just started the other day

whenever i go to start my vehicle now it seems to take longer for it to start up and sometimes if i pump the gas pedal and make sure the ac is off then it will start a little better but sometimes it doesn't work

I know my o2 senser is bad , but i dont know if that has anything to do with it

Hello,

When it does start (after significant cranking), do you see a puff of black smoke from the exhaust? Your IAC may be stuck and not letting the proper amount of air in at startup, thereby flooding your engine. Pumping your accelerator will have little effect since your vehicle is EFI. I suggest doing a search about cleaning your IAC.

How's your air filter?

no puffs of smoke or anything , i notice now if i drive the vehicle and let it sit for a little bit like 10 minutes or something then the vehicle will start right away but when i let it sit like when im at work and having it sitting for almost 8 hours then it takes longer to start up

It will still start if i just turn the key and leave it there for an extra few seconds longer then normal then it will still start

I did have a check engine light and i went to autozone to have it checked and it gave me the code number #2482 isays large leak detected , explanation the ecm has detected a large leak in the evap system , probable cause defective loose or missing fuel cap , evap canister broke hose cracked or not connected , purge or vent solenoid defective or vacuum leak at engine

Do you mean P0455? This is the EVAP large leak/no purge flow code.

Do you have a rough idle? How's your fuel mileage?

I wonder if you have a vacuum leak in one of the EVAP lines which is preventing proper starting enrichment.

It think it is P0455

Gas mileage does seem a bit worse lately but as far as idling it doesnt seem to be a difference

If it is a vacuum leak in the evap lines , were is the evap on my vehicle and how can i check to see if its definitly that

I know in the past to find a vacuum leak ive been suggested to use starter fluid and then of course once you notice the sound difference then you found the leak

I know when i had to take out my fuel pump that one of the lines that connects to the tank was tough to get on and the person helping me took off the inner plastic part but then the hose clicked in place after the piece was that , so i dont know if that could be the cause at all

If your fuel mileage overall is noticeably down, I'd suspect a vacuum leak; the engine is compensating for the unmetered air intake by injecting more fuel. I also suspect that this is a continuous vacuum leak, meaning it's ahead any EVAP valves or solenoids. If the leak were behind any EVAP components, you would only have a vacuum leak while the system purged. This would only throw the P0455 code and not cause overall poor fuel economy.

If you don't have any idle problems, it's going to be tough to confirm a vacuum leak without a gauge. Do you have a vacuum gauge? Look for erratic needle fluctuation, however subtle. A sealed engine will have a smooth, steady needle. My '97 usually draws about 19-20 in.Hg at idle.

Typically, EVAP leaks are found with a smoke machine, and your friendly Ford technician will command the EVAP system to purge, allowing smoke to fill the entire EVAP system. Leaks are then determined by the location of seeping smoke.

Good luck,

Well today i just turned the ignition key to the on position but didnt turn on the engine yet and waited like 5 seconds and turned it off and then started the engine and it started fine

So its like the line is still working but maybe a little bit seeping out

like i said i think its from when we were changing my fuel pump and we disconnected the evap line that connects to the tank and there is an inner plastic piece that it was stopping it from going back in but once we took out the inner plastic piece then it went in fine , so maybe that is coming loose or something

May be a loose connection as you describe, but you really won't know for sure until a smoke test is performed. Perhaps when reconnecting, you cracked a line? I've done this before :thumbdwn:

Does anyone have a DIY technique for finding an EVAP leak? I've heard of regulating an air compressor down to 1-2 psi, connecting to the EVAP port, and listening for hissing...

Not sure if it was due to a loose hose or maybe a loose gas cap , but i made sure the gas cap was on tight and restarted the computer and the check engine light has been off for 2 days now and the vehicle seems to be starting and running better
