Starting problem

Today when I initially tried to start my 2000 Ford Explorer (140,000 miles), the engine turned over but wouldn't start. Afraid of draining the battery, I stopped cranking. Then a few minutes later I decided to try again, but this time I pumped the accelerator pedal a few times before I turned the key, and it started. So pumping the accelerator beforehand seemed to make the difference.

Does anyone know what could cause this problem? Could it be a weak fuel pump? Any ideas?

Cant hurt to change the fuel filter,Start with the EZ cheap things first, when was it last changed? A dirty filter is murderous on the pump.

Clean or replace your idle air control valve. Common Ford problem.

When you turn the key to the ON position, you should hear the fuel pump prime for a second or 2. If you don't hear that you have a fuel delivery problem which could mean the fuel pump relay is on it's way out. If you do hear it run and still doesn't start right away, consider changing the fuel filter.
