1997 Sport SOHC
Just spent $500 at dealership for my daughter's 1997 Explorer Sport SOHC. They replaced the starter, but didn't correct the problem. Soon as she stopped somewhere, it wouldn't start. Sometimes, all of the ignition lights come on and it just clicks, other times it spins and spins and still doesn't start. It it at the dealer now, i am in tennessee and she is in maryland. I think they have me by the shorthairs. Is this an alternator, safety switch, ignition, cable, electricial or what. We know it isn't the starter now.

If the starter gets enough power to spin, then it's probably not electrical. (alt, batt, wires, etc)

It's most likely fuel related. But it could also be ignition related.

How does the truck run when it does start?

If it were me I'd demand they put the old starter back and not charge me for that work if it didn't solve the problem in the first place.

I have demanded, but they say they got rid of the old starter. I have called them long distance three times today for a status and no one has called me back. Could it be the safety switch? When it has happened to me, it does nothing - no spin, no click - just all the lights on the dash come on and it just sits there. That is why I thought it might be the neutral safety switch or something.

I think it might need engine service, the injectors are probably a little gummy. I am not going to let the dealer do anything else though. She mentioned it was starting to run a little rough. Always had proper maintenance and oil changes, so its really not neglect. Fuel regulator replaced over a year ago.
