I am starting to experience a chattering noise at start up. The noise only last a second or two and it doesn't do it every time. I was wondering if it was the timing chain stuff starting to fail or what it was? Cause the way I understand it if it was the timing chain tensioner it would make noise at low idle for longer than just a second or two. Any thoughts?

What's the mileage, and can you define 'chatter' better? Does it sound like it's coming from the front of the motor, or could it be the starter?

73,000 It sounds like lifters chattering with no oil or something like that. It's just a quick chatter then all is well, no other symptoms or problems. I can't pinpoint where it is coming from.

Likely your chain tensioner. These may need to be done more than once over the life of the vehicle. Check out Owner Notification Program 00M12-S1 Ford Claims: "The condition of either or both of these components will not cause engine damage or Failure, but may decrease the customer satisfaction with the vehicle"
