I'm wondering if the 5spd std trans X's from 97-99 all came with Control Trac or did some come with the 2wd / 4 hi / 4lo system like on the rangers? Haven't been able to find a std on a lot to look at. Not fond of the Automatic 4x4 in the control trac, want another X but not if it has control trac. Love my '91 but she's starting to show her wear at 150K, being my primary vehicle that also doubles as a truck for towing, etc. Starting to doubt she's going to stand up to another 30K year as the drive train is quickly tiring.

From what I know all 4x4 Explorer's (auto or manual) in that time period were Control Trac, unfotunately. Although mine has worked fine for 2 years.

I believe the Explorers came 2WD/Auto/4Lo, and the last year for that was '96(?). After that (97), I think it has been Auto/4Hi/4Lo (definitely from '99 on, that I do know).

you have to move up to an Expedition to get the 2WD/Auto/4Hi/4Lo

Yes, all manual equipped 4x4 Explorers built from '97-'99 came with Control Trac. It shouldn't be a negative though since from '97 on the Control Trac does have the settings of Auto/High/Low. So instead of a 2WD setting you get the Auto setting. Much (much) better than 2WD in my oppinion. To me it is almost like the equivalent of having traction control (only much better). I had traction control on my '95 T-bird and my Auto setting is so much better. On my T-bird when the rear wheels would slip, my ABS would start pumping the slipping rear tire until it regained traction (or got both rear tires spinning). On my Explorer when the rear tires slip, it diverts some of the torque from the rear wheels to the front. There have been many circumstances that would have required 4WD had it not been for the Auto mode. Last winter I was up playing around in 12" of snow without ever having to switch it into High. I put it in High to get a comparison. The only difference was that when in High it started moving a fraction of a second quicker. Another advantage to Auto is that you maintain the light steering that 2WD provides, but get the traction that 4WD provides. Even if I had a 4th setting of 2WD, I can't see any reason to use it unless it offered better fuel economy. If it doesn't then there would be no benefit to having a 2WD mode. I think Ford even dropped the 2WD setting from the Expeditions as well now. I know it used to be on the '97 Expeditions, but I seem to remember someone with a '98 saying his only had Auto/High/Low.

Thanks for the information guys, I was afraid that would be the answer. I just can't make myself like the control trac. I've test driven a number of X's with it and driven a friend of mines '99 SOHC in the winter with it and absolutely hate it! Not that I think your wrong in liking it but I like to control exactly what the vehicle is doing. Guess that's why I love a std trans too. Not to mention I really dislike the idea of my 4x4 kicking in on dry pavement when pulling out of a parking lot in a hurry. Looks like my next vehicle will be a ranger, too bad really love the X. (unless i can find a '94 with really low miles)

I believe the '02 Sports dropped the control trac and went back to 2wd/4hi/4lo, at least that's what the rep at the detroit auto show told me last spring. True?? (not that they are even an option)

Hey is there away to disable the control trac auto and force 2wd similar to what the Expedition has.

Yes, if you remove the 4x4 fuse or disconnect the wire connector to the shift solenoid. Both will make your 4x4 lights flash until you replace the fuse or connector.
