As our mot's are due up for both in a week, we have noticed with the engine off, steering lock off and turning the steering left to right there is a noticable sound, does anyone elses do this?

You're turning the wheels side to side with the engine off? You're introducing air into your steering system...

Mine makes a very muffled thunk, but it sounds like slack being taken up in the column more than anything.

I wasn't moving it enough to turn the wheels though.

You can turn the wheel with the engine off? Nuff respect!

i mean not full lock, by turning it till you feel the resistance then turn it back the other way, barely 1cm steering travel

Could be your intermediate steering shaft...

I had a bit of binding on the uj in the steering shaft in the engine bay. The boot was destroyed so i regreased and put a new boot on and all good.

^ that one ^ :)

I've always noticed a knocking from any power assisted steering system when the steering wheel is "rocked" without the engine (and hence pump) running. I used to think that this was something abnormal and was quite paranoid about it. The Focus TD I had a few years ago knocked quite badly but there was no problem and the car still steered and handled brilliantly under normal use. It seems to be a feature of powered steering systems and some are worse than others. However, I'm going to check my Ex tomorrow!

Mine was making a real bad grinding/clicking noise when i turned, (especially left turns) sounded like a bad cv joint, but it was the steering uj, my boot had split and it was dry as a bone, I just gave it a good squirt of wd40, that kept it quiet and got it thro the mot (I dont think the tester even checked the boot) and i repeated the wd40 every few weeks , then finally i got some proper grease and covered it, boots still split tho and i have to re grease it now and then. when i figure a way to get my very un-nimble fingers into where they need to go to remove the shaft ill fit a new boot

Premature posting there!!! ....as mine is up for MOT this week! I'm not looking forward to it. Hopefully the my washer, wiper, etc. problem (seperate long thread) won't rear it's head during the test. Good luck with yours.

ok i checked both exs and the cv boots are cracked open and bone dry, looks like ill get a pair for them this week, hopefully that works cheers fellors

Good luck to you both with your MOT's (all three of them).

Mike
