I've begun to notice that my steering seems exceptionally loose. I can rock the steering wheel quite a bit in either direction before getting any response from the tires. Is there any way to tighten up the steering response?

Have you had the front end inspected for loose parts? Loose tie rod ends will cause the steering to feel vauge. If everything is tight, it is possible to adjust the pre-load on the sector shaft in the steering box, but I wouldn't recomend doing it, as it is a bandade fix and can cause severe handeling issues if not done correctly. You'd be better off replacing the gear box with a reman. unit.
