'95 XLT 4dr. I replaced the stock head unit when i got the explorer 2 years ago. I believe it has the external amp based on the wires. I recently began having almost no sound from front left speaker, then lastnight all the sound cut out and i could smell burning elect from what I assumed to be the head unit (alpine). It was still on just no sound. I replaced the stereo today, but still no sound from brand new sony. So i hooked up a speaker directly to the sony and it works. the alpine, which i thought was fried, also outputs fine from all 4 channels. so, now I guess it must be the stock amp. I am confused however because i keep reading that the amp is behind the rear seat on psgr side yet I swear i smelled that burning from the dash! Any thoughts? Thanks. and if i run new wires does anyone know where i can cut power from going to a fried amp? (i can see the amp could fry as the alpine h/u is 60w/channel pushing that amp)

some are under the dash kind of behind the radio. some are on the rear hatch with a sub speaker.
mine is in the rear side box on the driver side of my truck where my jack is located.

I'm really not sure how these systems were designed but I haven't found a lot of them to be the same.

your amp could be right under/ behind the glove box area

If there is an amp its behind the passenger rear cargo panel. What you will have to do is bypass the amp.

thanks guys. I found the amp was indeed behind the panel in the cargo area. is actually pretty easy to get to if you pull out the little netted cargo pocket behind it. It would be a pita to jump wires back there but if you really had to... I pulled it out and it wrecks of burnt electronics. think I am goin to run new speaker wires, but not all the way to the speakers, will just splice into the existing wires before they go into the door.
